    101 Essential Rock Records PB

A passionate tribute to vinyl, spotlighting rock's most influential records -- from The Beatles' 1963 debut Please Please Me to the Sex Pistols' Never Mind the Bollocks (1977) -- 101 Essential Rock Records celebrates the "Golden Age" of album art. A thoughtful essay on each album accompanies the original vinyl cover artwork, with rare variations from around the world. Also included are provocative interviews with musicians discussing the albums and artists who changed their lives. David Bowie speaks eloquently about the Velvet Underground's influence, noting his band, Buzz, performed "I'm Waiting For The Man" at their last gig, and that "it was the first time a Velvet song had been covered by anyone, anywhere in the world. Lucky me". Susanne Vega, Peter Buck (REM), Johnny Marr (The Smiths), Nels Cline (Wilco), Devendra Banhart, Robyn Hitchcock and more contribute original texts. Pictorial explorations of Jimi Hendrix's personal record collection, and a survey of censored album covers from throughout the rock era are also featured. The sales of vinyl LPs have been growing rapidly while other physical mediums continue to wither, a trend driven in no small part by classic re-issues and the advent of record store day in 2008. 101 Essential is the perfect accompaniment and guide to digging in the bins for that quintessential vinyl experience.

    90 Degrees of Shade

The image of the Caribbean is as much a creation of the West as it is the result of its population's incredibly complex identity. A melting pot of races born of the 400-year slave trade -- Africans, indigenous Americans and their French, Spanish, German, Dutch and English colonizers -- the identity of the Caribbean stands at the intersection of tourism, colonialism and tropicality. This deluxe large-format volume features hundreds of fascinating and unique photographs that span 100 years of Caribbean history, culture, industry and more, as well as the subsequent diaspora of its people to America, England and elsewhere. The photographs show the many ways in which the region has been portrayed, from tropical backdrop of tourism and hedonism to colonial outpost and revolutionary threat in North America's own backyard. The introduction is by Paul Gilroy, author of The Black Atlantic, There Ain't No Black in the Union Jack and Black Britain:A Photographic History (2004), among others.

  • Arcana II

    Arcana II

In his preface to the first Arcana: Musicians on Music (2000), avant-garde composer and saxophone player John Zorn wrote: "This book exists to correct an unfortunate injustice, the incredible lack of insightful critical writing about a significant generation of the best and most important work of the past two decades." That the injustice was repaired by that collection was happily affirmed by its subsequent success. The range of writing--from the technical to the aphoristic/diaristic--demonstrated that sometimes critical writing on music can inspire as much as it can explicate. As Zorn acknowledged, though, Arcana was also a first step. Now Arcana II, also edited by Zorn, extends the scope of its predecessor, compiling further essential writing by luminaries of contemporary improvisation and composition such as Butch Morris, Evan Parker, Marina Rosenfeld, Ned Rothenberg, Sylvie Courvoisier, Steve Coleman, Dave Douglas, Annie Gosfield, Jim O'Rourke, Milford Graves, Zeena Parkins, Bill Laswell and Uri Caine.

    Arcana IV: Musicians on Music

Now in its fourth installment, with a fifth in preparation, John Zorn's acclaimed Arcana series provides insight into the work and methodologies of some of the most creative musical minds of our time. Arcana V: Musicians on Music, Magic & M

For centuries musicians have tapped into mysticism, magic and alchemy, embracing ritual, spell, incantation and prayer, and experimenting with esoteric approaches to harmony, pitch and vibration. In recent decades, avant-garde musicians have rediscovered these overlaps, as occultism has reinvented itself--through Buddhist and other Asian influences, Thelema and Chaos Magic--to accommodate cultural strains from psychedelica through Punk and Industrial music. This special edition of John Zorn's much acclaimed Arcana series focuses on the magical aspects of the act of making music. Neither historical overview nor musicological study, it illuminates the sympathies between music and the esoteric tradition with the help of today's finest experimental musicians and occultists. Among these are William Breeze, Gavin Bryars, Alvin Curran, Fred Frith, Sharon Gannon, Larkin Grimm, William Kiesel, Yusef Lateef, Frank London, Meredith Monk, Mark Nauseef, Pauline Oliveros, Genesis P-Orridge, Terry Riley, David Toop, Greg Wall, Peter Lamborn Wilson and Z'ev.

    Beats to the Rhyme

Author Al Patterson started collecting vinyl in elementary school. He's since amassed a serious collection and deep knowledge of instrumental-only Hip Hop records. Some are "performance" records that were pressed in very small numbers for use exclusively by the MC or group's DJ during live shows, while others were commercially released. These instrumental records are cataloged alphabetically by artist and accompanied by a photograph of the record's label. Each entry specifies the artist, title, format, producer, label, year, and catalog number as well as notes and anecdotes about the disc. Many are very rare and totally unknown. All have stories attached to them. Patterson once asked Raekwon (Wu Tang Clan) to tell him more about a certain rare pressing. Raekwon replied "I thought they destroyed all of those". Many of these records were pressed in such small numbers that they'll never be seen outside the pages of this book, but it doesn't hurt to look.

    Birgit Nilsson: 100

Though arguably the last of the “true” Wagnerians, Swedish soprano Birgit Nilsson (1918-2005) was by no means limited to Wagner in her repertoire. Her roles as Isolde, Brunnhilde, Salome, Elektra, Dyer's Wife and Turandot were often collectively referred to as the “Nilsson repertoire.” Nilsson's voice was capable of flooding an opera house with oceans of sound, which no commercial recording has ever been able to capture; recordings of live opera broadcasts however come much closer to the real Nilsson voice. This book celebrates the centennial of Nilsson's birth, with texts from prominent members of the music world and photographs of the singer's greatest roles.

    Black Fire! New Spirits!

At the start of the 1960s, jazz entered a unique period of revolution as African-American musicians redefined the art form in the context of the Civil Rights Movement, Afro-centric rhythm and thought and an ideology of black economic empowerment. John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Sun Ra, Pharoah Sanders, Albert Ayler and others developed a new cosmology of sound that was as revolutionary as the social and political changes that took place in America throughout the decade. From the musical explorations of John Coltrane, Cecil Taylor and Ornette Coleman to the collective and community concerns of Chicago's Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians and the black science fiction of Sun Ra, the new jazz musicians created a musical and cultural landscape from which jazz never looked back. This large-format deluxe hardback book features hundreds of stunning photographs of the new jazz musicians in the USA throughout the 1960s, presented with an introductory essay and biographies on the many artists included in the book.

City of Exiles: Berlin from the Outside In

Berlin is a no man's land, a city adrift in the sands of Central Europe, a place where all belong and none do. Destroyed and divided during a century of chaos and upheaval, borderless Berlin has remained a city where drifters, dreamers and outsiders have always believed they can find a place: Voltaire and Hannah Arendt, Iggy Pop and Albert Einstein, Franz Kafka and Rosa Luxemburg, Karl Marx and Aleister Crowley, W.H. Auden and G.W.F. Hegel, Nick Cave and Vladimir Nabokov. Australian-in-exile Stuart Braun evokes these restless spirits that have come and gone from Berlin across the last century: itinerants who, he argues, are the source of the Berliner Luft, the special free air that infuses this beguiling metropolis.
